Inaugurated in 1965, it is the second largest football stadium in Brazil, and is listed among the greatest in the world. The stadium has hosted great soccer competitions and thrilling matches. In the recent past (1997), Mineirão held a total of 132,834 people in a final state league match between Cruzeiro and Vila Nova. For safety reasons, the capacity of Mineirão has now been reduced to accommodate about 72,000 people.
